"Kya naam tha Tumhara"......"tha nahi, hain!!! aur rehagaa, Gurukant Desai" roars Abhishek Bachchan alias Guru..
One of the dialogues that has been shown on all the TV channels!!! Simple, Crisp, with conviction and straight from the heart !!! that is how the whole movie is.
Not recommended for Karan Johar fans.No switzerland, No Australia, No America, two frames of Istanbul and the rest completly India!!
Guru, is a fight between right and wrong, between idealism and capitalism and strangely between strong and the strong!!
Its a journey of a man, who loves to dream, who walks out of his comfort zone to acheive his dream, a man who is ruthless enough to beat all the odds that come against his vision, even if it wrong and by the end of the journey you almost end up revering him!!!
He starts off like you and me....but ends up being India's biggest business tycoon!!
Wont get into the story much, everyone has to watch it to understand the power of Mani's Cinema.
In tha acting department...
Mithun Chakraborty - this man was a joke in the industry till last we heard of him..Just have to say "Welcome back Mithunda", he suited the personality of an idealistic, honest newspaper editor.Just one request to all the directors out there "please use him, he is brilliant"
Abhishek Bachchan - apart for legal matters, i dont think he needs to use the surname anymore for his movie career.Drop the Bachchan..Abhishek has arrived. After his menancing act in "yuva" as Lallan Singh, he has raised the bar of his acting its such a pleasure to watch, got goose bumps while watching him perform.
Ashiwarya Rai - Ahem Ahem!!!Maam you know to act also...Her character is the one of a typical supportive housewife, but the strenght in the character is unbelievable...and she has done justice to it.
Madhavan - few dialogues, but amazing screen presence.
Vidya - wish could see more of you in the movie.
And my favorite Roshan Seth - He is just around for 5 miutes, but every time he said something, i would be out of my seat, taking in what he said superlative performance.
and lastly Bombay - the movie would have been incomplete without her..she is a very silent character..the sea, the landscape, the people, the business, the culture and Guru itself would have been incomplete with her.And the credit completly goes to Rajeev Menon. His cinematography was like sequences of poetry...the train in the moonlight, the picturesque locales, the focus of the character, the ambience of the movie...Well taken.
The biggest disppointment in the movie is the music, please note not the BG score.Rehman...i hate saying this "Not upto the mark"....:( After RDB, this was medicore stuff.
The other most important part of the movie is its phenomenal dialogues, i just kept smiling after hearing each dialogues just couldnt get over it!!
And finally the movie is characterstically Mani.Abhishek has been around for a while, we have seen him act in many movies, but it takes Mani to make us sit and notice.
The color, the light, the oldies, the kids, the bedroom drama between a husband and wife, he makes marriage so appealing. The narration , the pace, the romance is all so typical Mani but yet he has bowed down.
He has bowed down to suit the North Indian janta..else can anybody explain why is Sujatha ( Aishwarya's character) wearing a low neckline cholis...isnt that a typical "simran", "muskaan", "riya" wardrobe!!..Thats a only place he has faltered..somewhere he just looses the realistic flavor and logic.
But after having said that, Guru is one of the good movies which has come out from Bollywood in recent times. After Omkaara, if any movie would catch hindi cinema lovers attention then it has to be Guru.
Simply Mani's worth!!!
AB Baby was fine, except for the makeup issues. He was looking too young to be old, especially when he tries to push his stomach out to appear older :)
ReplyDeleteu better fit in as critic for bollyood movies. u analyze things deeply. keep up the good writing. eager to read more [:)] take care. have fun. bye!
ReplyDeleteamazing review!!!....enjoyed reading it :)
ReplyDeleteNothing new to report is it? :)
ReplyDeleteVillage damsels may yet dance in the rain, for the sheer joy of it, but surely not in the style of Guru.
ReplyDeleteDon't you think Mani has lost it -- think about Roja's village damsel and how simply she was depicted.
What's the difference between "Thiruda Thiruda"'s 'Veerpaandi Kottiyale' (Chandralekha, in Hindi) song sets, lighting and cinematography from "o humdum.. bin tere kya jeena.." -- isn't it time for ManiR to renew himself?
Doesn't it say a lot about the movie if the character you like most appears only for 5 minutes??
My points, for your consideration vonly. After all, to each his own!
